Performance Medicine

Lameness Evaluation & Diagnosis

Understand your athlete

Lameness exams for performance horses are comprehensive assessments designed to identify and address the root causes of issues or performance declines. These exams may include:

  • Detailed History
  • Physical Examination
  • Gait Analysis
  • Flexion Tests
  • Diagnostics
  • Nerve and Joint Blocks

Our goal during a lameness evaluation is to develop a tailored treatment plan that restores comfort, mobility, and peak performance.

Therapeutic Joint Injections

Help your athlete perform their best

Joint injections play a vital role in maintaining the health and performance of sporthorses. They address joint pain, inflammation, and mobility issues, ensuring horses remain comfortable and competitive. Basically, the joint therapy products are broken down into biologics (Pro-Stride and Alpha2EQ, which are processed from the horse’s own blood), polyacrylamide gels (NoltrexVet and AthramidVet), and classic pharmaceuticals (steroids and HA). Below are the advanced joint therapies offered:

  • Corticosteroids & Hyaluronic Acid: Commonly used to reduce inflammation and improve lubrication within the joint.
  • NoltrexVet by Nucleus ProVets: A long-lasting joint therapy designed to enhance joint lubrication. NoltrexVet creates a protective barrier inside the joint, which is gradually reabsorbed over time. It is particularly beneficial for horses with metabolic issues, Cushing’s disease, gastric ulcers, or a history of laminitis. Research in Standardbred and Thoroughbred racing has shown that NoltrexVet can reduce the need for frequent joint injections.
  • AthramidVet: An innovative treatment that provides "bio-scaffolding" for joint health. AthramidVet is ideal for horses with osteoarthritis caused by traumatic injuries or performance-related wear and tear. It restores synovial health and supports regeneration of the synovium and joint capsule tissue, enhancing the overall structure of the joint.
  • Alpha2EQ by Astaria Global: This orthobiologic therapy uses Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M), a natural protein derived from the horse’s own blood. A2M acts as a trap for protease enzymes and inflammatory cytokines that damage tissue during inflammation. Alpha2EQ injections directly address joint inflammation, promoting healing. Compounded Alpha2EQ can be frozen and stored for up to 12 months, offering a practical long-term solution.
  • Pro-Stride Autologous Protein Solution Device: A stall-side treatment that concentrates cells, platelets, and growth factors from the horse’s blood to support joint health. Pro-Stride APS delivers therapeutic proteins and anti-inflammatory cytokines directly into the joint, providing immediate inflammation management and healing.

For additional treatment of soft tissue injuries, we offer Shockwave (PulseVet) and Laser therapy.

Regenerative Therapies

Recovery with your athlete in mind

  • PulseVet Shockwave System: This noninvasive therapy uses high-energy sound waves to relieve pain, accelerate healing, and improve overall joint health. Shockwave therapy stimulates cellular healing, increases blood flow, and enhances bone and tissue regeneration. The Equine Trode Set targets specific areas for precise treatment.

Class IV Therapeutic Laser: Utilizing light waves to create photochemical effects, this laser therapy accelerates tissue repair, improves vascular activity, reduces fibrous tissue formation, and speeds wound healing. It’s an excellent option for managing chronic pain and reducing the need for medication.
